The Baby Skinner Foundation is a charitable organization established in 2011 in Riverside, Illinois by The Sherman Family. The mission of the foundation is to bring those within our community together for a philanthropic cause. Each year we look to provide a family with relief and support during difficult times of illness, loss, or tragedy. Our annual pig roast fundraiser has been successful and rewarding for those who participate, for the recipients and their families, and everyone who so generously donates.
This year, Baby Skinner Foundation honors Kevin Brooks and his beautiful family. Kevin lost his long-fought battle to colon cancer on March 28, 2024, leaving behind his wife Jennifer, twins Jaxon and Colton (8), and their little brother Lucas (5).
Kevin was a very healthy self-employed architect who loved his wife, his children, and his Harley. Kevin was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in August of 2020. His cancer carried an aggressive mutation that also saturated his liver with cancer. After being turned away from four cancer treatment centers, his wife Jennifer was able to find a facility that would treat him. After undergoing one year of chemotherapy, Kevin had a tumor in his colon removed, along with 60% of his liver, his gallbladder and appendix removed. His recovery took four months during which time Kevin was not receiving chemotherapy. In the fifth month of recovery, doctors discovered his cancer had returned and spread. Chemotherapy had to begin again immediately, or he faced just two months to live. Kevin fought through sixty-nine additional treatments, numerous blood transfusions, several bouts of pneumonia, COVID-19, and sepsis. Unfortunately, his colon stopped working and caused complications which resulted in his passing on March 28, 2024. In his wife’s words, “To say he was a fighter was the least of it. What I saw him endure week after week, I am not sure I could go through all that, but he was strong willed for his family and was determined to beat the cancer.”
Kevin was a hero in his children’s eyes. He was their Harley Dude, their everything. Jennifer has lost her husband and partner in life and although she is incredibly strong, she and her boys are grieving and heartbroken. Jennifer and the boys will experience many firsts without Kevin this year and it will undoubtedly be very difficult for each of them in their own way. It is our honor and privilege to do what we can do to support their family and give all three boys an incredible day on August 3rd in honor of their dad, Kevin Brooks.
We look forward to our best fundraising efforts yet in honor of Kevin and his sweet little boys Jaxon, Colton, and Lucas and loving wife, Jennifer through our Baby Skinner Chicken Dinner Pig Roast at the Andrew Towman Grove in North Riverside on Saturday, August 3, 2024.
On behalf of the entire Baby Skinner Foundation and the Sherman/Lyson Families of Riverside, we thank you for your generosity and kind hearts.
Sincerely,
The Sherman and Lyson Families of Riverside
